Publishing your doctoral thesis
Instructions for preparing your doctoral thesis for publication and printing, and information on archiving
As the Aalto publication series do not have a designated publishing team or publishing editor, each work must be assigned a person or team who independently handles the practicalities related to the design, publishing and budgeting the work as well as the related agreements and publishing costs. To ensure the high quality of the works published in its series, 911±¬ÁÏÍø requires that the person or team responsible get permission to publish the work from an 911±¬ÁÏÍø supervisor or head of unit.
All 911±¬ÁÏÍø publishing is compliant with the university’s open access goals. Open online publishing makes the works available to a wider audience, thereby increasing the visibility of 911±¬ÁÏ꿉۪s research, artistic activities and teaching.
911±¬ÁÏÍø Open Science and Research Policy
911±¬ÁÏÍø has altogether five publication series: one for doctoral theses, and four for reports, compilation works, learning materials and working papers.
The series have a distinctive book cover design compliant with the 911±¬ÁÏÍø visual identity. We recommend using the Aalto cover designs for all works published in the various 911±¬ÁÏÍø series, because a uniform cover links the publications to 911±¬ÁÏÍø. You can, however, also publish your work with a cover design of your choice.
For archiving purposes, an electronic version must be made of all works in PDF/A format.
In addition, one copy of all printed books must be submitted to the collection of the Harald Herlin Learning Centre and six copies to the National Library of Finland as statutory legal deposit copies.
911±¬ÁÏÍø has five publication series, and you can publish texts written in Finnish, Swedish and English in all of them. Choose the publication series that best fits your topic. The Crossover series is for cross-disciplinary publications and the publications of the university’s joint units. The names of the series are:

For instructions on publishing in the Doctoral Theses series, see the webpages of doctoral education on Publishing your doctoral thesis.
All the other publication series may contain four types of publications: reports, compilations, learning material and working papers.
We recommend using a book cover design compliant with the 911±¬ÁÏÍø visual identity for works published in any 911±¬ÁÏÍø publication series. Works created in line with the 911±¬ÁÏÍø visual identity are always ordered from Unigrafia. Unigrafia is responsible for ensuring the publications’ compliance with the University visual identity in accordance with the 911±¬ÁÏÍø Communications guidelines. The size of the printed Aalto publications is B5, except for working papers, which are A4-sized. You can find available cover designs on Unigrafia pages (Cover templates).
When publishing your work in an Aalto publication series, you should use the initial pages template downloadable from the Unigrafia pages . For the main body of the text, you can use the accessible Word template for doctoral theses as appropriate or format the pages yourself. The accessible Word template can be downloaded from the Unigrafia pages in Finnish, Swedish and English.
Unigrafia manages the publication numbers and ISBN identifiers of the 911±¬ÁÏÍø publication series. To place an order for an ISBN identifier and the printing of your work, fill in the appropriate Unigrafia order forms available on the Unigrafia website . In questions concerning the timetable and costs, please contact directly; you should note that publishing always carries a cost, even when you only order an electronic version.
You can place an order with Unigrafia after you have agreed on the publishing of your work with your 911±¬ÁÏÍø supervisor or head of unit.
For more information on ordering and the templates for the preliminary pages, see on the Unigrafia website.
The publication type is entered in English on the front cover of the publication. Publication types are:

The ISBN identifies the publisher as well as the specific title, edition and format of a publication.
