on July 1 will be entirely online. After plenary speakers and lectures there is a panel discussion “Girls and Mathematics: reflections and initiatives”, dedicated to the memory of Yulia Zdanovska will follow. Yulia Zdanovska (2000-2022) was a brilliant young mathematician, silver medalist at the European Girls' Mathematical Olympiads in 2017. Working as a volunteer, she died on March 7 2022 in a fire caused by a Russian missile that hit her residential area in the eastern city of Kharkiv, in Ukraine.

To introduce the discussion, panelists will describe the various initiatives they are part of to encourage young women who love mathematics to follow their dreams.

The July 2 session celebrates Olga Alexandrovna Ladyzhenskaya. It is jointly organized with the  and opened by professor Antti Kupiainen from the University of Helsinki and Marie-Francoise Roy, chair of the IMU Committee for Women in Mathematics.

Aalto researchers are also involved in organising the event.

It will take place in the morning at the University of Helsinki and be broadcasted for (WM)² attendees. Olga Alexandrovna Ladyzhenskaya (1922-2004) occupies a very special place in the history of mathematics and mathematical physics worldwide. Her theorems shaped the modern theory of Partial Differential Equations and inspired extraordinary advances in several branches of mathematical physics. The year 2022 marks her 100th birthday.

The session program includes the premiere screening of the film “Olga Alexandrovna Ladyzhenskaya” by Ekatrina Eremenko, and the announcement of the inaugural recipient of the Ladyzhenskaya Prize in Mathematical Physics.
