Assistant professor, Kwantae Kim, Integrated Circuit Design, Department of Electronics and nanotechnology

'I do research in circuit design, specifically integrated circuits, also known as semiconductor chips. The field of integrated circuit design is fascinating, as many people foresee an explosion in the number of Internet of Things (IoT) devices over the next decade.

My research focuses on ultra-low-power integrated circuits, analogue/mixed-signal integrated circuit design, and full-custom memory integrated circuits for neuromorphic signal processing and biomedical sensor applications. I find these areas particularly exciting because I believe they will be key to the development of tiny sensor platforms.

My big research dream is to integrate four features into (IoT) platforms: making them 1) Tiny, 2) Sensory, 3) Intelligent, and 4) Wireless, and then make these technologies accessible to everyone.

I am excited that Aalto possesses world-class research infrastructure, especially for wireless platforms. From my experience in South Korea and Switzerland, I have never seen anything like this at any University. I look forward to engaging with this fantastic integrated circuit design expertise at Aalto and collaborating with a strong network of internal and external partners!'

Assistant Professor, Paul Verrinder, Semiconductor Sensors, Department of Electronics and Nanotechnology

'The semiconductor sensor research enables the development of more energy-efficient photonic integrated circuits, which is critical when new technologies like AI represent an ever-increasing percentage of global energy demand.

My research focuses on integrated photonics and semiconductor lasers. Photonic integration technology has revolutionized the way we process and transmit information and enables the high-speed internet required for our increasingly connected world. We are exploring new approaches to integrating lasers onto semiconductor chips with other optical components. This research field is particularly exciting to me because it combines fundamental physics and material science, with immensely practical applications.

I am excited to be a part of Aalto and look forward to using the state-of-the-art semiconductor fabrication infrastructure that will enable me to pursue my research goals. My expectations for working at Aalto include establishing a dynamic research group that pushes the boundaries of integrating photonics, while building strong collaborations with the excellent researchers already at Aalto and contributing to Finland's growing photonics ecosystem.'
