The implementation of Aalto's language guidelines will be carried out in stages

With the goal of supporting our community’s multilingualism and multiculturalism, the Aalto language guidelines, in terms of the language of instruction and language of degree, will be implemented in stages. The guidelines will support Aalto’s position as a member of the global scientific community and ensure the status of the national languages of Finland – Finnish and Swedish – as languages of research and education, in accordance with the Universities Act (558/2009).

The curriculum planning for the academic years from 2024 to 2026 will still be done largely according to the previous (2015) guidelines on the languages of instruction and degree. Multilingual practices and opportunities to complete courses in national languages will be added to courses whenever possible.

The most concrete part of the work now visible to students in strengthening national languages of Finland, Finnish and Swedish, is that the names of English-language degree programmes and major and minor subjects have mainly been translated into national languages. The translations can be seen in both the Student Guide and in Sisu, for example, in the study plan. The translation of names ensures that the terminology of Aalto's disciplines is up-to-date also in national languages and supports students' opportunities to communicate their own skills and education also in Finnish and Swedish, for example to employers. As before, students will receive a degree certificate or its translation in Finnish or Swedish and in English.
