Summer course in Italy: Safety of underground transport infrastructure
The Summer School 鈥淪afety of Underground Transport Infrastructure (Focus on New Energy Carriers)鈥 explores how sustainable mobility transitions are reshaping tunnels, rail systems, and other underground infrastructure. Organised in collaboration with Unite! partner universities, the course combines online learning with a one-week intensive programme in Turin, Italy.
The programme addresses key challenges related to electrification, renewable fuels, and hydrogen use in transport systems, with a strong focus on safety, risk assessment, and infrastructure design in confined environments. Students will work on real-world engineering challenges in international teams and gain hands-on experience through case studies, exercises, and expert-led mentoring.
The online phase covers fundamental principles of underground transport systems, the safety of alternative propulsion technologies, and European regulatory frameworks. The in-person week in Turin includes project work, group presentations, and a technical visit to tunnel safety facilities in Aosta.
