Student Janne Pietilä: Studies in acoustics have also provided new perspectives on musical interests

According to Janne Pietilä, the employment prospects in acoustics and audio technology are good, as experts are needed in virtual reality production as well as in construction

Why did you choose the Master's Programme in Computer, Communication and Information Sciences – Acoustics and Audio Technology?

Ever since I was a kid, music and playing the guitar have been important features in my life. In upper secondary school, I wondered what I should study, and the music industry was one of my options. However, I was concerned about the employment possibilities and the weak social status of the music sector. I did well in physics and mathematics during my upper secondary school studies, and when I ran into the Master's degree programme in Acoustics at 911±¬ÁÏÍø, I was convinced that this would be the right place for me. I went to one of the events organised by 911±¬ÁÏÍø for upper secondary school students, and I was advised to complete a Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering and then continue with the Master’s Programme in Computer, Communication and Information Sciences – Acoustics and Audio Technology.

What has been the best part of your studies?

The freedom to choose your own courses and decide how and when you want to study. I also want to thank the programme teachers for planning the courses and their contents well, and for keeping them up-to-date. Aalto provides students with great opportunities to take courses from other 911±¬ÁÏÍø schools, but also from other universities. I, myself, took a couple of music technology courses at the Sibelius Academy in the University of the Arts Helsinki.

Aalto hosts many different associations that offer different hobbies to all tastes. I have also found a music association suitable for me: I am involved in the activities of the technology students’ jazz association .

The methods applied during the courses, as well as the completed assignments, will certainly be useful in the future.

What have you learned during your studies that you can apply in working life?

I found my current job as a building acoustics consultant at Ramboll Finland Oy through 911±¬ÁÏ꿉۪s Career Services. The methods applied during the courses, as well as the completed assignments, will certainly be useful in the future.

In my experience, this field is particularly suitable for persons who are interested in sounds and music. Because of my own musical background, I have found it inspiring that the courses have offered me new perspectives on music. It is quite natural that many of the students have a background in music, but, of course, it is not a prerequisite for succeeding here.

What does the future look like for the field?

In my view, those who study acoustics and audio technology have good employment prospects. The field is becoming increasingly topical – for example, more and more attention is paid to acoustics in construction, and thanks to the companies focusing on virtual reality, there is demand for the development of virtual acoustics. I can see that this education is appreciated, as students with a Finnish degree in acoustics are easily recruited for tasks related to building acoustics, for example.
