The list of the most cited researchers has been compiled on the basis of the information provided by a Dutch publisher Elsevier. The message about making it to the list was a surprise to Oja, but he does know a large number of the researchers listed in the Shanghai ranking.

鈥淭he most cited of my publications is Independent Component Analysis, a book about data analysis methods, which was published in 2001 together with Juha Karhunen, and Aapo Hyv盲rinen from the University of Helsinki.  The book is cited altogether more than 9,000 times, when publications are normally cited a few hundred times. The book is like a handbook, and in a way you cannot avoid citing it if you publish something in this field,鈥 says Oja.

鈥淪implified Neural Model, a model of neural networks published in 1982, has also been cited a lot. It had a total of 2,000 citations.  Many researchers have started to develop the model, and the book itself is a continuation to a model of neural networks,鈥 tells Oja.

Erkki Oja, who retired in 2015, is Professor Emeritus at the Department of Computer Science. He lead, for example, the COIN Centre of Excellence successfully for years. At the moment, Oja is preparing for a plenary presentation on neural networks and machine learning at the ICANN conference in Barcelona. Teuvo Kohonen and Erkki Oja organized the first ICANN conference in Finland 25 years ago, in 1991.
