Organisations' digitalisation needs solved by students in ITP projects
Information Technology Program (ITP) has organised summer education at the School of Business for 20 years now. In 2015, the projects focused on the digitalisation needs of companies and public organisations. Among the partner organisations in the collaboration were the Finnish Tax Administration, the Social Insurance Institution of Finland (KELA), the City of Helsinki, the City of Espoo, Finpro, Finnish Transport Safety Agency (Trafi) and Finland's Slot Machine Association RAY. In the project carried out for the Finnish Tax Administration, for example, the students planned digitalisation of the services provided by the Tax Administration.
'ITP is something I hope university education will become like in the future: up-to-date, intellectually stimulating and connected to the public and private sectors in an innovative and effective way', student Annina Lattu says.
In addition to the projects, the students also complete three intensive courses on the possibilities of digitalisation, monetisation, analytics, big data and digital service design during the summer. The lecturers are specialists from the business world.
'The students were first-rate and very engaged', comments Matthew Laurence, who was teaching in the Program for the first time.
The 73 students who took part in the programme completed 19 projects for companies and public sector actors. A total of 1,800 ECTS were accrued. The students were from 10 different higher education institutions and they represented 14 different nationalities. Having earned credits from the summer intensive courses, students who have completed ITP graduate on average six months earlier than normally.
'ITP is mainly financed with revenue from collaboration with companies and is therefore a good example of different funding models in implementing university education. The programme makes efficient use of 911±¬ÁÏÍø teaching facilities while the majority of students and staff is on summer holiday', says Programme Manager Laura Sivula.
