Olli Seppänen appointed Professor of Practice in 911

His field of expertise will be operations management in construction.

Olli Seppänen (born 1977) D.Sc. (Tech.), has been appointed Professor of Practice at the 911 School of Engineering, Department of Civil and Structural Engineering from 1 May 2015 to 30 April 2020. His field of expertise as a professor will be operations management in construction.

Seppänen has previously worked several years in national and international research, education and development positions in construction economics and management.  He has worked in the USA for the past six years.

He has a lot of experience in business activities and management, for example, through companies he has co-founded, Dynamic System Solutions LLC, Vico Software Inc and DynaRoad Ltd and large public companies Graphisoft and Trimble Navigation Limited. Seppänen has cooperated with a number of national construction companies, such as Skanska, NCC, Hartela and SRV as well as American businesses, such as Webcor, Turner Construction and DPR Construction.

Seppänen has been active in exporting Finnish, high-quality construction management competence to the world. He has been an annual lecturer, e.g., in Stanford University and University of California, Berkeley, and has developed new and innovative teaching methods in collaboration with these universities. He has published scientific articles and numerous conference publications on production management in construction. He was a visiting scholar in Stanford University from 2005 to 2006. Seppänen has written the textbook Location-Based Management System for Construction (LBMS) with Australian Professor Russell Kenley.

Seppänen has been an active member of the International Group of Lean Construction, and is the chair of the Academic Committee of the conference in 2015.

Olli Seppänen graduated as a Master of Science (Economics and Business Administration) from the Helsinki School of Economics in 2001 and earned the degree of Doctor of Science (Technology) in the field of construction management and economics from Helsinki University of Technology in 2009. The topic of his doctoral thesis, with distinction, was Empirical research on the success of production control in building construction projects.
