Master students from different disciplines at 911 explored the qualities of ceramics and glass materials. The works in the “Light on White - Ceramics and Glass Surfaces and Structures” exhibition are results of the Product and Space Interaction course organized by the Department of Design last fall. The exhibition is still open for a week at the Beta Space gallery in Otaniemi.

"With little elements, the students managed to find countless numbers of different nuances of the subtle characteristics of ceramics and glass", says teacher Nathalie Lautenbacher.

The restricted brief was to fill a white square surface, sized 800 x 800 mm, with the natural materials, with no colorants added. The given frames gave students the possibility to dive straightforward into material qualities. Altogether 16 different approaches to the task brings up a variety of results--from subtle glaze surfaces to an original mix of new and traditional manufacturing experimentations.

The course was partly conducted in co-operation with Nuutajärvi Glass Village Cultural Association. Teachers of the course are Kirsti Taiviola, Eeva Jokinen and Nathalie Lautenbacher and the visiting lecturer Harri Kalha. The works were produced with studio masters Kazushi Nakada and Tomi Pelkonen and glass blowers Janne Rahunen and Otto Koivuranta.

Students: Anni Avela, Sushant Passi, Pauliina Purhonen, Monika Faidi, Megan McGlynn, Maria Punkkinen, Maija Leskelä, Riko Omata, Sean Fegan, Kristoffer Heikkinen, Yulia Popova, Sia Furman, Meri-Tuuli Porras, Ekaterina Krotenko, Marjut Alitalo and Milja Partanen.

Date: 30.1. - 27.2.2018
