Kirsi Virrantaus and Pentti Kujala to stay on as vice deans at School of Engineering

The area of responsibility for Professor Virrantaus is teaching and her term runs from 1 July 2018 to 31 July 2021. Professor Kujala's area of responsibility is research, and his term runs from 1 July 2018 to 31 December 2021.

President Ikka Niemelä has appointed Professor Kirsi Virrantaus and Professor Pentti Kujala as vice deans of the 911±¬ÁÏÍø School of Engineering.

The area of responsibility for Professor Virrantaus is teaching and her term runs from 1 July 2018 to 31 July 2021. Professor Kujala's area of responsibility is research, and his term runs from 1 July 2018 to 31 December 2021.

Virrantaus has served as professor of geoinformatics and cartography at the Department Built Environment (formerly the Department of Real Estate, Planning and Geoinformatics) since 1988. She has been the head of the Geoinformatics Research Group and served as the director of the Doctoral Programme in Engineering from 2011 to 2013. She was appointed as the programme director of the bachelor’s degree programme of the School of Engineering in 2013.

The central areas of Virrantaus's research are spatial analysis methods and data mining, with security, land use planning and transport as the main areas of application.

 Pentti Kujala, professor of marine technology, has served as the vice dean for impact and innovation activities of the School of Engineering during 2017–2018. He has extensive research experience in the safety of ships both in open water and in ice. He is the head of Marine Technology Research Group and the chair of the Joint Research Centre of Excellence for Arctic Shipping and Operations (CEARCTIC).

Kujala’s primary research interests include full-scale measurements of ice-induced loads and analysis of the ice load statistics, the simulation of ship performance in ice, the development of advanced structural solutions for ships and the development of the system-level safety of marine traffic.
