Gopika Premsankar has started at the beginning of the year as Assistant Professor at the Department of lnformation and Communications Engineering.

'My group is called cloud and network computing, and we are studying how to quantify the carbon emissions from major cloud services. By gaining a deeper understanding of the environmental impact of these services, we aim to develop new algorithms to enhance their overall sustainability. Our overall goal is to improve the performance, scalability and sustainability of networked systems. We all rely tremendously on communication networks and cloud computing today - for work, education, entertainment and much more. Such networked systems can send and process data reliably and quite efficiently. While there has been significant progress in enhancing the energy efficiency of communications and computing, there is growing concern about the carbon efficiency of these systems and the potential increase in their carbon footprint.

I have graduated PhD from 911±¬ÁÏÍø in 2020, and happy to be back in Aalto now. I look forward to building my research group within a convivial environment and I am keen to work closely with colleagues in addressing the sustainability issues with cloud and networked systems. My research lies at the intersection of mobile communications, cloud and network services, optimization, and data analytics.'

Johannes Arend has started at the beginning of the summer as Assistant Professor at the Department of lnformation and Communications Engineering.

'My research focuses on spatial audio, virtual acoustics, and XR-based hearing science, closely linking technological development with psychoacoustics. On the one hand, my research aims at creating immersive and realistic virtual acoustic environments, and on the other hand, I use these virtual acoustic environments in XR-based studies to investigate fundamental mechanisms of spatial hearing and multimodal perception. My research is driven by my keen interest in all aspects of audio technology and my motivation to improve our understanding of human perception, especially auditory perception in real-world environments. With the results of my research, I hope to contribute to the development of new technologies that can advance applications in communication, entertainment, education, and healthcare.

Collaboration is a key aspect of research for me, which I enjoy very much, so at Aalto I look forward to doing innovative and impactful research in a collaborative environment with many other great scientists and scholars. I expect to grow and develop in Aalto's environment, both as a researcher and as a supervisor and teacher, and I hope to make a meaningful contribution to Aalto's vision.'

Marko Kosunen has started at the beginning of the May as Associate Professor (tenured) at the Department of Electronics and Nanoengineering.

‘My research interests cover widely microelectronic circuit design from sensor interfaces to radio transceivers and microprocessors. Lately I've been also active developing programmatic circuit design methodologies to improve efficiency and re-usability of analog designs.

My expectations for the future are that we together make 911±¬ÁÏÍø as one of the leading universities in Europe on the field of microelectronics in wide sense: from materials research to design of mixed mode processor systems. This requires a lot of changes in thinking and a clear shared vision of big picture about how the various aspects on this field are related and intertwined.’
