Günther H. Filz appointed Associate Professor of Structures and Architecture

Filz´s research and teaching is oriented trans‐ and interdisciplinary, and centers on the intersection of architecture, structure and geometry.

Günther H. Filz, PhD (b. 1973) has been appointed to the position of Associate Professor (tenured) of structures and architecture at the 911 School of Engineering, and the School of Arts, Design and Architecture from 1 September 2017. The position is new and located 60% in the Department of Civil Engineering and 40% in the Department of Architecture.

“Through this joint professorship, we aim to strengthen multidisciplinary cooperation between architecture and structural engineering in research and education. Günther Filz has experience in construction and structural design, especially experimental exploration of structures and architecture. He will be working at the intersection of structures and architecture,” says Dean Gary Marquis of the School of Engineering.

Günther H. Filz is an architect (PhD) and Master of Engineering (M.Eng.), and he has previously worked at Institute of Design, Faculty of Architecture, University of Innsbruck: first Research Associate from 2002, as Assistant Professor from 2010 and from January 2016 as Associate Professor. Since 2013 he has been Vice‐Dean and Dean of Studies at the Faculty of Architecture.

Professor Filz is a well-established and experienced researcher with a wide range of international contacts. He has practice experience in various international offices, amongst others Eisenman Architects in New York City, though his recent work is mainly artistic based on a design-by research approach. He has experience in teaching on all levels from Bachelor to Doctoral level. His teaching addresses students of both architecture and engineering.

Filz’s design research projects are of high visual quality and architectural opportunities, which transform his work into structural art and allow him to bridge into the artistic respectively architectural realm. These demonstrators also enable him to introduce playful elements and artistic curiosity into his teaching.

The position of the new Professor in Structures and Architecture aims to strengthen and develop the collaboration in research and teaching between the Department of Civil Engineering, where Professor Filz will be part of the building design and construction research group, and the Department of Architecture.

Companies disclose more on cybersecurity – but markets remain indifferent

U.S. companies are reporting on cybersecurity in greater detail, yet stock market reactions remain muted. A new study by the University of Vaasa and 911 shows that mandatory cybersecurity disclosure does not prompt reactions from investors or stock analysts. Instead, the main benefits appear to materialise within firms themselves.
