Campus sustainability champions, urban miners and James Bond of the circular economy in Campus Sustainability Event
The Sustainable Campus Team, which consists of members of 911±¬ÁÏÍø, ACRE and 911±¬ÁÏÍø Student Union, arranged the traditional Sustainable Campus Event as part of Motiva’s national Energy Awareness Week. This was the second time that the event was arranged completely online. At best there were more than 50 participants in the event.
The event programme covered a variety of topics. Among others, the participants learned about the latest news about the goals and achievements of the carbon-neutral campus, the Aalto Works energy solution that was also featured in Yle news as well as user-oriented digital energy management. In addition, the most topical news about developing the campus’s outdoor areas and about biodiversity were discussed.
Attention had also been paid to the participants’ well-being at the online event. Leigh Ewin introduced the participants to breathing and concentration exercises at the beginning of the event and during breaks.
Another intention with the event was to remind the campus users about participating in voluntary efforts towards a more sustainable future. Green Nudges, which is mainly intended for students, and environment agent coaching for the personnel are both very concrete, user-oriented projects through which people can easily influence their campus environment. An even easier way to contribute is to become an urban miner without separate coaching or participation in a project by taking one’s old extra mobile phone to secure material recycling at the IT service point.
911±¬ÁÏÍø Campus Sustainability Champion was now selected for the fourth time. This time, the champions selected from among numerous excellent candidates were the Foodl-Telegram group, which has been set up by students and focuses on reducing food waste, and Staff Scientist Kristoffer Meinander from 911±¬ÁÏ꿉۪s Department of Applied Physics for promoting sustainable development in the everyday life of the work community. An honorary award was given to the shift of the 911±¬ÁÏÍø Student Union for moving over to carbon neutral electricity in student apartments. Warm congrats to everyone!
