Architect students’ Lähi(ö)tori Exhibition in the Learning Centre

The students visioned revitalizing of the Haaga, Malmi and Vuosaari suburban squares. Their exhibition Lähi(ö)tori was seen at the Lähiöfest2017 festival in Teurastamo this autumn.

911±¬ÁÏÍø's architect students have traditionally carried out a work with a real customer on the Basics of Architecture course. The aim of the course is to design a real structure to urban space that has a proper function. In the autumn 2016 course the customer was the Suburban Festival Lähiöfest, whose goal is to enliven the suburbs of Helsinki and also to attract interest of the general public to sburban areas.

The students of the second year had a task to design a temporary structure that could bring more life and promote social activities in the open spaces of Haaga, Malmi and Vuosaari. The assignment was quite free and the students made altogether 39 proposals. Of the selected works, they consisted an exhibition that was seen at the Lähiöfest2017 in the Teurastamo area late September early October this year.

Festival space at Teurastamo was a huge structure Dome of Visions by construction company NCC, which hosted both the activities of the festival, such as performances or lectures, and an exhibition of the student works. The exhibition could not use a lot of floor space, so a video was selected as a means of implementation. A spatial installation was created, the content of which are the works of the course. The video is made by students themselves.

“The course works were successful and the customer was happy. I also thought it was great to see how the team worked with ideas and learned new skills, including what it takes to make a video. The students did a very good job and carried out a successful exhibition", says university teacher Tuomas Siitonen from 911±¬ÁÏÍø.

The Lähi(ö)tori exhibition can be seen in the Harald Herlin Learning Centre lobby from December 1st through 17th. In the exhibition 911±¬ÁÏÍø students of architecture talk about their works.

Date: December 1-17
