Aalto Event Book, winner of the Energy Efficiency & Low Carbon Competition
911±¬ÁÏÍø and the Aalto University Student Union (AYY) organised the Energy Efficiency & Low Carbon Competition for the first time in autumn 2014.
The aim of the competition was to discover novel, innovative and practical solutions ranging from simple everyday improvements to ambitious infrastructure updates, taking into account energy efficiency and reduced carbon emissions in the future development of the Aalto campuses.
A total of 26 entries were submitted, and the jury nominated a development budget for the best three proposals and one honorary mention.
The further development of the winning entry Aalto Event Book: Availability to the Otaniemi premises from a single address is being negotiated with its authors. The winner was chosen based on the view of the entire campus and the linking of the university community to the rest of society that was opened up boldly by the entry. According to the jury, Event Book provides significant economic benefits as a result of increasing efficiency of use of space with facilities in the Otaniemi area becoming a jointly shared resource. The same proposal received also the student union prize.
The second position went to an entry called Visual Campaign for the Project EcoCampus by 2030. The proposition presents delightful and practical ways to remind the community of the need to reduce our energy consumption to obtain the aimed target. The jury praised the entry’s visual way of depicting the achievement of the objective and the measures taken.
The third position went to Subtle visibility –the Dipoli Solar Project. According to the rationale, the competition entry has boldly investigated a solar energy solution for a building that has such high a culture-historical value as Dipoli. The exceptional length of the on-site modelling, one of the biggest strengths of this proposal, illustrated that the panels are not visible on street view and hence do not interfere the protected facade.
Energy Dialogue with Invisibles was awarded with an honorary. The research-level proposal combines flexible, automated building technology adjusted by the usage rate, makes the energy data visible and thus influences the user’s attitudes. The case analysis in some of the campus provides concrete possibilities to utilize the idea in both teaching and research, and serve as a concrete action of the Ecocampus 2030 objectives.
In addition the jury awarded the best entries in each competition categories.
The role of the 911±¬ÁÏÍø Properties Ltd is to utilise the results of the contest and it has actively participated into the ongoing process.
The Aalto community warmly greets all participants. The competition will have a continuance, taking place next time in autumn 2015.
