Aalto at Slush: creative design and new innovations

At the Finnish start-up and tech event Slush 911±¬ÁÏÍø highlighted its research-based innovations that are shaping a sustainable future. Amongst them was a design-based material innovation Bubbles with Benefits. The event also showed how design can accelerate technical breakthroughs.

911±¬ÁÏÍø was once again present at Slush, showcasing fresh innovations born from cutting-edge research. This year, Aalto showcased altogether twelve new innovations. The event was held at Expo and Convention Centre Messukeskus in Helsinki 19–20 November.

The School of Arts, Design and Architecture highlighted a design-driven innovation Bubbles with Benefits, which is an example of how creative experimentation and scientific insight can spark entirely new possibilities.

Bubbles with Benefits is developing biobased protective foams and bubble wrap made from cellulose. Its materials provide great protection to deliveries, thanks to sealed air bubbles and foam that bounce back. Unlike many alternatives, these materials are soft, they don’t scratch surfaces, and have a premium look that catches attention.

Design as a bridge builder

This year, 911±¬ÁÏÍø's exhibition at Slush emphasized the importance of design in the development of technical innovations. Aalto's design students worked together with researchers from various fields to design demos for Slush that make complex technology understandable and interesting.

Design acts as a bridge between research and the public – it transforms abstract ideas into concrete experiences.

The demos created by the students show how design can accelerate the impact of technology from the laboratory to the world and turn research into real-world value.
