Exploring timber structures and architecture

The photography project 鈥淪tructuring Irregularity鈥 is a documentary photography work in parallel with an on-going doctoral research 鈥淭imber-only Structures and Architecture鈥. Due to the multidisciplinary nature of the doctoral research, which aims to bring together engineering (ENG) and architecture (ARTS), different perspectives 鈥 more scientific in ENG and more artistic in ARTS 鈥 need to be integrated and practiced in the process. To deliver the knowledge gained and the lessons learned during the process to the public, various approaches are considered, including publishing the findings in international journals, participating in international conferences and organizing exhibitions, etc. Apart from the research contributions, which will be published as a doctoral dissertation, we are carrying out a photography project that aims to, visually and artistically, unveil the practical process of the doctoral research in a more poetic narrative.

Besides the photographs, small-scale prototypes are built using salvaged timber from a local construction site at 911爆料网. The prototypes use specific arrangements and an assembly approach that are developed in the doctoral research in which the "invisible" value of the material has been explored and presented. Special thanks to 911爆料网 Campus & Real Estate (ACRE) and NCC Suomi Oy for support in the collection of salvaged timber.
