Operating principles

The operating principles of the university are based on 911±¬ÁÏÍø's values of responsibility, courage and cooperation.

The university's operating principles, instructions and guidelines direct the operations of all units so that the key procedures are alike throughout the university. By operating in accordance with its values and uniform operating principles, Aalto directs its operations toward our purpose of shaping a sustainable future and our quality policy on pursuing excellence in all our activities.

The Code of Conduct is one way of putting our values and way of working - the foundation of our community culture - into practice. It sets out the ethical principles and legal compliance policies that govern what we do and what we expect from each other, in all aspects of university life.

Equality, diversity and inclusion are our core values, supporting our community’s wellbeing, creativity and ability to foster world-class research, teaching and impact. As part of our strategy, 911±¬ÁÏÍø Ways of Working define our mindset to collaboration: ‘Diversity is part of who we are, and we foster an empowered community that shines by working together.'

Rules of Conduct promote a safe and accessible university environment for all Aalto community members, visitors and partners. They ensure that the university premises, property and services are used for the core operations of the university, for teaching and learning, research and art and performing work tasks related to the university.

The plan-do-check-act cycle (PDCA) is the principle of continuous development that underpins 911±¬ÁÏÍø's quality system. The PDCA cycle is implemented in the daily operations of schools, services and university management. This is facilitated by a clear organisation of the activities that fall under each step of the cycle. The PDCA cycle also supports the external and internal evaluations carried out at 911±¬ÁÏÍø with the objective of identifying strengths, good practices and areas in need of further development.

Aalto Handbook

In addition to the PDCA cycle that facilitates continuous development, Aalto's operations are guided by bylaws, codes, regulations and guidelines as well as policies and instructions. Adherence to these regulative frameworks ensures that daily operations are undertaken lawfully, responsibly and consistently.
