Spatial Superhearing
Spatial superhearing techniques allows for the perception of inaudible soundwaves or -fields. This enables spatial perception in instances where visual perception is impaired.
Description
The technologies developed in Aalto can augment the hearing of humans to any inaudible wave or radiation field, such as ultrasonic active echolocation for vision-impaired or underwater conditions, or hearing the direction of source of ionising radiation. In the technologies the direction-of-arrival of waves or radiation is measured using an array of sensors, the signal is brought to audible area, and reproduced spatially to the subject.
Another potential application of superhearing techniques is drones (submerged and aiborne) for spatial detection.
