New study options for the Bachelor's Programme in Engineering

The spring 2022 joint applications process will feature four new options for the Bachelor's Programme in Engineering (studies in Finnish or Swedish): Energy and Mechanical Engineering, Sustainable Communities, Real Estate Economics and Geoinformatics, and Civil Engineering.

The new study options form an ensemble that connects students with research in their fields of study. Sustainable Communities introduces students to the planning and design of large systems, such as residential areas. Energy and Mechanical Engineering and Civil Engineering emphasise functional buildings, structures and energy systems. Students of Real Estate Economics and Geoinformatics will have the expertise and digital know-how needed to manage the life cycles of systems.

'Making the relevant master's programmes more visible within our study options will help future applicants figure out what they will be studying and what their study path might look like. Studies will still be flexible and students will have the freedom to design their own study paths. These changes will also have some effect on student intake numbers,' comments Professor Jani Romanoff, vice dean for education at the School of Engineering.

Find out more about the school's four new study options below. The Finnish and Swedish names of the study options are given in parentheses. Note that the study option pages linked below are not available in English.

Energy and Mechanical Engineering

(Energia- ja konetekniikka, Energi- och maskinteknik)

Energy technology and mechanical engineering are key disciplines as we progress toward zero-emissions communities. This new study option emphasises a command of multifaceted issues and systems expertise. Future students will learn not only to design details but to understand the roles of various devices and systems as parts of a larger whole. The study option leads to master's degree studies in the Master's Programme in Mechanical Engineering or the Master's Programme in Advanced Energy Solutions.

Sustainable Communities

(Kestävät yhdyskunnat, Hållbara samhällen)

Climate change, urbanisation and the depletion of natural resources are phenomena that require a more comprehensive understanding of the planning and management of built environments. The Sustainable Communities study option provides students with a springboard to a career in designing and implementing solutions for local and global challenges through technology. The curriculum is unique in Finland and even abroad, offering a combination of land-use planning, transportation engineering and water and environmental engineering. Further studies are available in the Master's Programme in Water and Environmental Engineering and the Master's Programme in Spatial Planning and Transportation Engineering.

Real Estate Economics and Geoinformatics

(Kiinteistötalous ja geoinformatiikka, Fastighetsekonomi och geoinformatik)

Real Estate Economics and Geoinformatics is the only study option in Finland to combine these two important fields of study into one bachelor's degree in technology. It offers interesting career prospects that may reach key positions in society, with no limits on ambition or creativity. Real estate economics and geographic information are intertwined with some of future's burning questions and build the foundation for modern societies. Studies in these areas can be continued in the Master's Programme in Geoinformatics or the Master's Programme in Real Estate Economics.

Civil Engineering

(Rakennustekniikka, Byggnadsteknik)

Civil engineering is a dynamic and diverse field that covers not only buildings, but the rest of built environments as well: from bridges to tunnels and stadiums. Students get to become a part of a societally crucial field that is continuously being renewed through new technologies and one that will have a decisive role in turning climate measures into action. The study option connects the mathematical and technological basis of engineering with creative design and management. After the bachelor's degree, students of civil engineering can pursue further studies in the Master's Programme in Geoengineering or the Master's Programme in Building Technology.
