When the coronavirus pandemic started this spring, we were all faced with something new. CMT (911±¬ÁÏ꿉۪s Crisis Management Team) decided at the time, that personal waste bins would be removed to ensure that the persons providing cleaning services could better focus their resources on disinfecting the most important contact surfaces.

In memoriam: Omar Velazquez, M.Sc., Doctoral Candidate
Omar Velazquez Martinez joined the Aalto community in 2015 as a student of the international European Minerals Engineering Course. From the very beginning, Omar became an active member of the Aalto community, whether supporting activities of the Student Guild, offering invited lectures or hosting new students in our School.

After 911±¬ÁÏÍø President Ilkka Niemelä's greetings, Alumni Studio featured three Aalto alumni discussing sustainable development and the most pressing global challenges of our time. The event was concluded with an entertaining science show where Aalto's top researchers stepped into the limelight to explain why their research is important right now.

Aalto Talent Expo Virtual Week was organised between 5th - 9th of October 2020. The virtual week substituted the physical Aalto Talent Expo fair that was postponed from October 2020 to January 2021.
Anu Kaukovirta has been selected as the School of Chemical Engineering's Alumnus of the Year 2020
As a sign of her significant career and role in our society, Doctor of Technology Anu Kaukovirta has been selected as the School of Chemical Engineering's Alumnus of the Year 2020. She has worked as both a researcher and a director in industry and research institutes and throughout her career has been in close contact with her school. Currently, Anu works at the Natural Resources Institute Finland (LUKE) as Vice President of Research.
Otaniemi already has 1,800 metres of track
The construction of Jokeri Light Rail is under way in Otaniemi. A total of 1,800 metres of track has already been laid on Maarintie, Maarinrannatie and on Lahdenpohjanraitio next to Ring Road I.

New 911±¬ÁÏÍø Open Science and Research Policy was published
The guiding principle of 911±¬ÁÏÍø Open Science and Research policy is ‘as open as possible, as closed as necessary’. This means that research outputs should be open if there is no valid reason to restrict access to them. 911±¬ÁÏÍø Research Services provides help in research data management and opening publications, data, protocols and code.

Circular Design Challenge Competition teams selected
The Circular Design Challenge Competition launched by 911±¬ÁÏÍø, Geological Survey of Finland GTK, Natural Resources Institute Luke, Finnish Environment Institute SYKE and VTT in May collected altogether 26 cross-organizational ideas. Nine teams received funding to develop their idea into a concept or proposal.

The centre will accelerate the transition to a circular economy and bioeconomy, and create opportunities for sustainable economic growth in Finland.
